Project Epitome of covid-19 came to light with the covid-19 breakdown that emerged in late 2019. As we witnessed the country facing the pandemic which started affecting the economy in the beginning of 2020 and saw no end with the second and third waves of Covid-19 a question popped up.
By initiating this project, we hoped to aid the country’s return to normalcy within our scope. The project was done under the Community service avenue focusing on the Rotary Focus area of ‘fighting disease’ and the district goal of ‘Covid-19 prevention’. It further addresses the Sustainable Development Goals of Good health and well-being. In order to help the country to overcome the crisis due to the virus, we initiated 5 phases to execute our project.
Phase One – Blood Donation Drive
Phase one consisted of a Blood donation drive to initiate our project. This was held on the 4th of July at the National Blood Center in Narahenpita.
Phase Two – Food Donation Drive
Phase two consisted of a Food donation to give a helping hand to the low-income families in Panadura. Each dry-ration kit which cost Rs. 2500 included rice, dhal, noodles, salmon, onions, chili powder, curry powder, salt, soya, flour, sugar, garlic, and tea leaves.
Phase Three – Vaccination Program
Phase three consisted of a vaccination program in collaboration with the Health Ministry of Sri Lanka and Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital. The vaccination program was carried out for children under the age of 18 with disabilities and elderly people over the age of 60 living in nursing homes.
Phase Four – Project Safe School
RACIIT implemented the fourth phase of the project ‘Epitome of COVID-19’ under the name of ‘Project Safe School’. To assist school students, teachers, and academic staff in returning to school in a Covid-free safe environment. The concept of Covid cubicles was brought forward which helps students to maintain the required physical distance with each other which in turn helps to reduce the transmission between a student and a teacher. 10 schools were selected to implement the Covid cubicles with the aim of providing a safe environment.
Phase Five – Assisting a Family in Need.
It is an evident fact that the Covid-19 virus caused a massive breakdown that affected all families in our country. The families that relied on their daily wages suffered greatly. In the fifth and final phase of Epitome of Covid-19, we focused on locating a family in need of such assistance and constructing a small shop for them. We identified a family in Anuradhapura for whom we decided to open a shop, with the main goal of providing this family with a stable source of income.
