On September 24, 2024, we proudly celebrated World Sign Language Day by launching Sign Sync 2.0, a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to enhance the development and accessibility of sign language in Sri Lanka. Our joint initiative with Rotaract Clubs of Colombo North and Colombo Heritage and Rotary Club of Colombo Reconnections is dedicated to breaking down communication barriers for differently-abled and marginalized communities, particularly people who are hard of hearing.

The Silent Symphonies app is set to redefine how sign language is learned and practised. Bridging communication gaps empowers hard-of-hearing individuals and those unfamiliar with sign language, enabling rich and engaging conversations that enhance daily interactions. Its user-friendly design ensures that it remains sustainable and impactful in the long term, truly revolutionizing the learning landscape for sign language.

Kicking off on September 6, 2024, the project took place at the American National College Auditorium. The highlight of this year’s initiative was the launch of the Silent Symphonies mobile application. This groundbreaking tool facilitates real-time sign language translation, fostering smooth and meaningful individual interactions.

We organized an engaging hands-on workshop with Sign Network.lk. Sir Asoka, a passionate advocate for sign language education and awareness, skillfully led this workshop. Building upon the foundation laid during last year’s program, he introduced new participants to the rich history and evolution of sign language in Sri Lanka. Sir Asoka advanced their knowledge by covering in-depth topics—such as the signs for months and days—thus enhancing communication skills for richer, more sophisticated everyday conversations.

Sign Sync 2.0 is more than just a project; it’s a transformative initiative that champions the rights and integration of the hearing-impaired community. By leveraging innovative technology alongside comprehensive educational resources, we are forging a future in which everyone can communicate effortlessly and participate fully in all aspects of life.
